International relations in an extremely local sense. That’s how I spend my days, managing the challenges, opportunities and occasional crises of a private security company in Afghanistan. Despite my day job, I haven’t lost my fondness for “big-picture” IR, although its sometimes a little difficult to see the big picture past the razor wire. My life is a microcosm of traditional IR practices scaled down, complete with negotiations with foreign nationals, the give and take of economic incentives and the ever-present threat of violence. Sound familiar? It should, its called geopolitics.
